Honda's S+ Shift: Simulating Manual in the 2026 Prelude Hybrid

For many who own hybrid and electric vehicles, the allure lies in their fluid and consistent power output. The absence of gear changes and abrupt bursts of engine speed provides a uniquely smooth driving experience. However, for driving enthusiasts, the act of manually selecting gears is an integral part of the enjoyment. Whether it's executing a perfectly timed downshift or simply relishing the control, many drivers are hesitant to abandon the manual experience. Honda is pioneering a solution that bridges this gap with its new S+ Shift system, set to debut on the 2026 Honda Prelude.

Why Hybrids Require "Transmissions" of Sorts

At the core of any hybrid vehicle is an internal combustion engine (ICE). Whether it uses gasoline or diesel, every engine operates within a specific range of speeds and torque output where it performs most effectively. Typically, hybrids pair the ICE with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to maintain the engine within its optimal performance range for both power and efficiency. This setup also allows the engine to disengage at lower speeds or shut down completely when the car is coasting or at a standstill. While Honda has employed CVTs in the past and even offered hybrids with manual transmissions, manually controlled gear changes can compromise efficiency, thereby undermining the primary goal of a hybrid system.

More recently, Honda has moved away from conventional transmissions. Instead, its latest hybrid system utilizes two electric motors in conjunction with a single, direct-drive gear. In urban driving conditions, the electric motor propels the vehicle. At higher speeds, such as on the highway, a clutch engages the engine to directly drive the wheels. A secondary motor acts as a starter, generator, and provides additional power when needed. Honda refers to this as an "eCVT," but in reality, it lacks a traditional transmission. This configuration currently powers the CR-V Hybrid, Accord Hybrid, and Civic Hybrid, and will now feature in the new Prelude.

The Prelude is positioned as a sporty, premium coupe designed to appeal to those who typically prefer manual gearboxes. To satisfy such expectations, Honda developed a method to simulate gear shifts through its eCVT system.

Unveiling S+ Shift

S+ Shift does not introduce physical gears. Instead, it recreates the sensation of gear changes. Similar to the paddle-shift-activated "simulated gears" found in electric vehicles like Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N, Honda's system combines electric motor modulation with engine sound to emulate the feel of a dual-clutch automatic transmission in manual mode. The ICE responds with revs, blips during downshifts, "holds gears" as commanded, and more. The electric motor adjusts torque to replicate the experience of upshifts, downshifts, and engine braking. The overall effect is a convincing imitation of gear changes.

In this setup, the engine primarily serves as a source of sound and supplemental power. Unlike the artificial sound systems found in vehicles like Hyundai's N or Dodge's "Fratzonic exhaust," the Prelude utilizes a real engine producing genuine sounds. This gives Honda a distinct advantage.

Weighing the Trade-Offs

Simulating gear changes inevitably introduces some compromises. Electric motors do not require gears, and any interruption of torque is artificially created. Drivers focused on maximum performance, such as those who race EVs, will likely forgo the simulated shifts in favor of seamless power delivery. However, everyday driving often prioritizes sensation as much as raw speed, and Honda anticipates that enthusiasts will appreciate the tactile feedback of using paddle shifters.

The advantage is that S+ Shift is an optional feature. Drivers can deactivate it and revert to the smooth, silent driving experience characteristic of electric vehicles, or even activate a one-pedal driving mode. This versatility is something a conventional, gasoline-powered performance car cannot offer.

Currently, Honda intends to keep S+ Shift exclusive to the 2026 Prelude, but it's reasonable to expect that it may be adopted in other models in the future. Hybrid or electrified versions of the Civic Si, Type R, or even Sport trims would be logical candidates. Whether S+ Shift proves to be a valuable innovation or a mere gimmick will become clear once we have the opportunity to test drive the Prelude. Nevertheless, it represents a creative effort to maintain the enthusiasm of drivers in an increasingly electrified automotive landscape.
